Preparing for a Psychedelic Retreat: A Practical and Emotional Guide

What does it mean to truly prepare?

Embarking on a psychedelic retreat is not something to be taken lightly. At the Experiential Training Institute (ETI), we meet individuals from all walks of life—therapists, seekers, healthcare professionals—each with their own story. The common thread? A desire for meaningful change.

Proper preparation helps create a safe internal and external container for the work to unfold.

1. Ground in Intention

Ask yourself: Why am I drawn to this experience?
Rather than aiming for a specific outcome, consider how you want to show up. Intentions that are open, curious, and emotionally honest tend to create more spaciousness in the process.

2. Consider Your Inner Landscape

Are there current emotional or relational dynamics that might surface during your retreat? We recommend gentle journaling or speaking with a trusted therapist in the weeks beforehand.

3. Prepare Your Body

While every centre has its own protocols, we generally suggest:

  • Reducing alcohol and caffeine

  • Avoiding processed foods

  • Prioritising sleep and hydration

  • Moving your body regularly

This is not about restriction—it’s about alignment.

4. Inform Your Support Network

Let a trusted friend or partner know what you’re undertaking. Choose someone who can hold space without judgement. Knowing you’re not alone can make a meaningful difference.

5. Be Open to the Unexpected

Preparation is important—but so is surrender. You cannot control what arises. What you can do is meet it with curiosity, compassion, and trust in the process.

Final thoughts

A psychedelic retreat is not just a weekend—it’s part of a larger arc of change. Begin how you intend to continue: with presence, care, and respect for the work.
